Background

Despite similar challenges, some young people develop mental health problems while others demonstrate a certain degree of psychological stability. When difficulties arise, they usually already show up during the school years. The aim of this research project was both to learn more about the factors that promote such mental health problems and to examine the factors associated with psychological stability.

Additionally, the development of mental health over time is to be investigated. When it begins to deteriorate, information can be derived about how and when to intervene in order to improve the mental health of young people. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the right time to better understand the mental health of young people.

For this purpose, a questionnaire study was conducted among students in grades 8 through 12, i.e. aged 13 to 18. The research team was present on-site at the cooperating schools and carried out the surveys together with the young people. The questionnaire captured the students emotional state, their life experiences and circumstances, as well as how they cope with difficult situations. The procedure was repeated six months, one year, and two years later in order to capture any changes. The first measurement took place in October/November 2021.
